On May 14, the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office Criminal Division 1 announced the indictment of Ms. A, the individual behind the YouTube channel Sojang, on charges of defamation and insult. Ms. A was found guilty of slandering seven celebrities and influencers, including Jang Wonyoung, by repeatedly posting fabricated videos on her channel from October 2021 to June 2023.


Fabricated Allegations:

Ms. A posted 19 defamation videos targeting five celebrities, including Jang Wonyoung, spreading false information and disrespecting their agencies’ work ethics. One particularly damaging video falsely claimed that Jang Wonyoung's jealousy led to the cancellation of a fellow trainee's debut, significantly harming the K-pop idol’s public image.


Legal Consequences:

The court ruled in favor of Jang Wonyoung and her agency, Starship Entertainment, ordering Ms. A to pay 100 million KRW (approximately 70 lakhs) as damages for slandering the K-pop idol. Additionally, the Sojang channel, operated by Ms. A, has been deleted.

Reports indicate that the Sojang channel gained significant traction, amassing 60,000 subscribers and generating an average monthly revenue of 10 million KRW. Ms. A profited a staggering total of 250 million KRW from spreading false information and defaming celebrities.
